Chocolate Chip Caramel Pretzel Cookies

A chocolate chip cookie may quite possibly be the best thing on the planet and how do you make it even better? I am so glad you asked. It’s by adding some sweet caramel bits and salty pretzels to get the perfect sweet + salty combination. These Salty Sweet Caramel Pretzel Cookies are one of my most popular cookie recipes of all time.

Does anyone remember the old school “Parent Trap” sequel made in the 1980’s (for sure I am dating myself)? While the parents are gone, the girls take out a big bowl and started to make cookies by adding everything and anything they could get their hands on – marshmallows, chocolate, M & M’s, potato chips, etc? I would rewind that over and over and dream about reenacting that cookie experience….and basically, we are doing just that! We are doing what those smart girls did in that movie and putting delectable ingredients into already perfect chocolate chip cookies.

These Salty Sweet Chocolate Chip Caramel Pretzel Cookies have that coveted buttery, crispy edges and chewy center. You get a little crunch from the pretzels, sweetness from the caramel bits and richness from the semi-sweet chocolate.

Recipe Summary

  • 1 (12 ounce) package crispy corn and rice cereal
  • 5 ounces slivered almonds
  • 6 ounces toasted, chopped pecans
  • ¾ cup butter
  • ¾ cup dark corn syrup
  • 1 ½ cups light brown sugar

Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Lightly grease a large roasting pan.

In a large bowl, mix crispy corn and rice cereal, slivered almonds and toasted, chopped pecans.

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and mix with dark corn syrup and light brown sugar. Pour the mixture over the crispy corn and rice cereal mixture. Stir and shake to coat all the nuts and cereal.

Pour the coated mixture into the prepared roasting pan. Stirring approximately every 15 minutes, cook 1 hour in the preheated oven. Cool on wax paper, and store in airtight containers.

22 Popcorn Recipes for Movie Night Snack Attacks

Crunchy, soft, and buttery, popcorn is the ultimate happy food. No wonder it’s such a popular party appetizer and late-night snack — and the ultimate companion for movie nights.

Popcorn has health benefits. It’s a whole grain with important nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, and it’s high in fiber. Unfortunately, popcorn is made unhealthy with additions at every turn.

At concession stands, it’s drenched in table salt and something that kinda resembles butter (but is it?). And then there are the warnings about the linings in microwave popcorn.

While it is possible to find healthier versions of microwave popcorn (they contain corn, oil, salt, butter, turmeric or paprika for color, and vitamin E as a preservative), we like to skip the packaged stuff and make our own.

We’ve found 22 recipes that create the flavors we crave. Get ready for movie night! As a bonus, we’ve paired each recipe with a recommendation for a film to watch while you munch away.

12 Simple savory-sweet pairings

From chocolate chili to Brussels sprouts with honey, foodies everywhere are pairing their favorite sweet and savory ingredients.

Not sure how to combine sugary flavors with salty and spicy ones? Here are 12 simple, healthy pairings of our favorite sweet and savory ingredients!

Chicken and rhubarb

Forget deep-frying chicken to get flavor. Instead, pair that poultry with something sweet. We love how rhubarb adds a tart but sweet tang (not to mention extra vitamins) to chicken breast without overpowering it. Try this recipe for grilled chicken with rhubarb chutney!

Cheddar and apple

This popular combo is often served on large platters for holiday parties and get-togethers. We love how this quick, simple bread pairs tart green apples with sharp cheddar cheese.

Chocolate and chili powder

Adding a pop of chili powder amplifies the richness and sweetness of chocolate. If you’re not sure of this combo, try a spicy chocolate bar to begin with. If you enjoy that, try this chocolate chili. You’ll love the creamy spiciness!

Dried fruit and herbs

Dried fruit isn’t as tart as fresh fruit. That’s why we love to pair dried fruits with savory herbs &mdash like parsley and oregano &mdash in baked dishes. Try this chicken and quinoa salad made with dried fruit, parsley and cardamom.

Fish and fruit

Fish is delicious, but it tends to get overwhelmed by flavorful toppings. Pairing a salmon filet (for example) with a tart, crunchy and juicy pineapple brings out the flavors in both. This easy recipe for a Hawaiian salmon burger makes pairing fish and fruit easy and delicious!

Honey and root vegetables

The addition of honey to this dish adds a burst of sweetness without overloading the Brussels sprouts with salt or fat. Honey will also bring out the natural sugars in root vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes. Try these Brussels sprouts with vinegar and honey.

Carrots and vanilla

Carrots are even more delicious when accompanied by a sweet, natural extract like vanilla. Start small by pairing the two in a carrot cake or in a bowl of this carrot cake oatmeal.

Pears and blue cheese

Pears have a refreshing, mild sweetness that complements a very bold and strong blue cheese. This duo is fabulous on a pizza or in a crispy, flaky tart.

Watermelon and olive oil

Watermelon isn’t called nature’s candy for nothing. Take one bite and this juicy fruit will welcome you with a bright, sweet flavor. Adding savory olive oil adds depth and turns a simple summer treat into a fancy and surprising appetizer. Mix the two in salads, on a skewer or grilled and stacked over veggies!

Dates with cheese

Dates get a bad rap, but the truth is that they are perfectly suited to being part of a savory-sweet combo. Creamy, salty cheese pairs with super-sweet dates for a classic combination. Try this date recipe with goat cheese and blue cheese.

Fruits and salt

Salt makes sweet oh, so good. Try something new by pairing honeydew melon with soy sauce or sprinkling sea salt on watermelon or nectarines. If you need a recipe to ease you in, try this pineapple fried rice recipe that puts the soy sauce&ndashseasoned rice into a bell pepper for a meatless meal.

Cauliflower and raisins

If you’re anything like us, you probably boil your cauliflower and season it with butter. But this vegetable can do so much more than be a salt magnet! Because it is so mild, it’s the perfect vehicle for some more exotic combinations. Try this sweet-savory caper, raisin and breadcrumbs cauliflower recipe.

Our Cake Batter Popcorn is sweet, salty, full of sprinkles and it tastes just like a Birthday Cake. This yummy and colorful snack is perfect for your next family movie night.

We took the taste of a classic Birthday Cake, mixed it with our yummy sweet and salty popcorn recipe and came up with a new Cake Batter Popcorn recipe is a celebration in and of itself. It would be a great addition to the dessert table at your next party or as a special treat for family movie night. Grab some sprinkles and let’s make a batch!

The base for our Cake Batter Popcorn is our Sweet and Salty Marshmallow Popcorn which is indeed sweet, salty, crunchy and oh so delicious. You can find all the detailed directions you’ll need to make this yummy popcorn right here .

You will also need some pretty Birthday Cake Sprinkles which you can find in the Baking aisle in most grocery stores.

The not-so-secret ingredient in our Cake Batter Popcorn is a box of Yellow Cake Mix.

Note about the cake mix: If you are worried about eating the raw flour in the cake mix you can bake the 1/2 cup of cake mix in a low oven for 15 minutes. Also, you will be adding the cake mix to a very hot mixture of melted marshmallows and butter so it will get slightly cooked during that process.

Melt the butter in a medium sauce pan. Add the mini marshmallows and stir until they are completely melted. Turn off the heat and add the cake mix. Stir until the completely mixed with the marshmallow mixture.

Slowly pour the marshmallow mixture over a large bowl filled with 10 cups of salted popcorn. Gently fold the marshmallow mixture in with the popcorn until the popcorn is mostly covered. The amount of marshmallow mixture you want to add is really up to your own taste. The more you add, the stickier the popcorn will be so we suggest that you add it a bit at a time, stir the popcorn and give it a taste before you add more.

Quickly add the sprinkles to the Cake Batter Popcorn and fold while the popcorn is still warm.

Now pour the Cake Batter Popcorn onto a cookie sheet covered with foil or a silpat liner. Sprinkle another handful of the Sprinkles over the popcorn. Allow the Cake Batter Popcorn to cool. Break apart into pieces and serve.

Our family loves this popcorn so it has never lasted longer than a day at our house. This popcorn definitely tastes best right after it is made but will keep for a few days in an airtight container. The popcorn is a little chewier the next day because the popcorn absorbs some of the moisture from the marshmallow mixture but it still tastes good.

Our Cake Batter Popcorn is a fun and delicious sweet and salty treat. And it is so easy to make. We hope your family likes it as much as ours did!
